Nokia releases its answer to iPhone - 5800 XpressMusic

Apple's iPhone has been a big hit worldwide, but competitors have until very recently been slow to come up with their own alternatives.

Now Mobile phone giant Nokia has announced its answer to the iPhone, the touchscreen Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. The 5800 will be released this month in the UK, but most markets (including the USA) will have to wait until early 2009.

The 5800 smartphone will come bundled with a 12-month subscription to Nokia's "all-you-can-eat" music download service in the UK. The Nokia phone will be less than half the price of Apple's comparable iPhone.

Nokia's new phone has a similar full-length touchscreen and virtual keyboard as the ground-breaking iPhone, but lacks the multi-touch "pinch" technology to zoom in on images and websites.

The 5800's screen is slightly smaller than the iPhone, but Nokia's phone includes a 3.2 megapixel camera which can also shoot video (iPhone's camera is just 2 megapixels, and doesn't do video).
The 5800's Symbian OS web browser also supports the common Adobe Flash web technology, which is notoriously absent from even the latest versions of the iPhone and iPod Touch. Nokia's inclusion of Flash could help force Apple's hand, with the company having refused to give in to user demands up until now.

    The Nokia 5800 will be released first in the UK over the next few months, priced at 279 Euros (around £254 once you include VAT). Other worldwide release dates are likely to be early 2009... expected to be priced around $395 in the USA, and Rs. 20,000 in India.
